It is very exciting for me to work with clients on commissions. There isn't a project too small or too big to request a commission. I have worked on commissions that range in size from 9" X 9" paintings, to walls the size of 20' X 100'. The best part of being an artist is that I get to work with a wide range of subject matter. Every project brings a new research challenge, design challenge, material challenge and spatial challenge.
First Step:
Email the artist at info [at] hadleyferguson.com and set up an appointment. If you live outside of Montana, I can work with you over a conference call and through e-mail. When necessary, travel arrangements can be made.
Initial Consultation:
In our first meeting I will listen to your project goals and needs. If the space is accessible, I will measure the wall you have chosen for the project in order to determine special project accommodations and size. Some clients have specific ideas about imagery and some aren't sure what it is they want. I can work with you to help you narrow down the design concept to best meet your needs. If you have a specific idea in mind, this is a great time to gather sample pictures of things that inspire you with regard to your commission.
Consultation Fee:
There is a small non-refundable consultation fee of $25.00. However, when you book your project the consultation fee will be deducted from the cost of the project.
After Initial Consultation:
At this point it is necessary for the client to determine if they would like to move forward on a design for their project. There is a non-refundable fee for the initial design. This fee is based on the size and scope of the project, and will be determined and agreed upon during the initial consultation. When you book your project the design fee will be deducted from the cost of the project.
Design:
An initial design will be drawn up for the client to review. This design will illustrate artwork to be executed as well as how it will fit within the designated space.
Contract and Final Review:
After the design has been drawn, there is a final meeting to firm up plans, book the project and sign the contract. At this point, I will make notes on changes needed with the design, and finalize a start and end date.
Pricing is determined by four factors:
• Location • Cost of materials • Difficulty or intricacy of the design • Working conditions such as restricted hours of operation, cramped spaces, wall texture, or indoor verses outdoor work
Pricing includes all materials needed to complete a project, including paint, brushes, canvas and installation hardware. However, certain items such as specialized equipment, scaffolding, or customized art panels or structures needed to complete the job will be added to the price of the project.
Payment
• Once we have reached an agreement to start your project, a contract will be presented that details work to be done and project start and end dates. • A 50% down-payment will be required at the signing of the contract. The deposit is used to purchase the supplies needed to complete your project and to schedule your project. • Once all the work has been completed and installed, payment in full will be expected.
I hope this information has been helpful in understanding the work process of a commissioned project. I look forward to hearing from you and working with you soon!
